Aspalathus linearis, the Rooibos plant (pronounced "Roy-Boss"), is native to the Western Cape province of South Africa and is the only place on Earth, unlike other green teas, where Rooibos can be found. Though it is technically a leaf that comes from a plant with broom-like branches, the potential health benefits of Green Rooibos parallel traditional green tea. Green Rooibos can offer a safer, non-caffeinated alternative for people who may be sensitive or who need to reduce caffeine intake due to health reasons. Most people are familiar with Red Rooibos, the fermented type. In the case of Green Rooibos, oxidation is slowed and fresh leaves are dried immediately upon picking. Preventing oxidation locks in powerful flavonoids and is shown to boost naturally occurring antioxidants 2x more than when compared to fermented red rooibos ¹.

There is strong evidence that Green Rooibos has many potential health benefits. Not only does it contains vitamins, minerals, and antioxidant content, it is also known to assist in regulating blood sugar. It has antispasmodic properties, prevents lipid peroxidation and the development of cell-damaging free radicals, restores the protein damage caused by stress, regulates glutathione metabolism, and modulates changes in the activity of antioxidant enzymes ².

Caffeine-free, this tea is also completely safe for children, adults, and pregnant and nursing mothers.

Expect a light body with mild astringency (tannins) that is slightly sweet, with woody, grassy notes. This tea is best served alone with no sweeteners or milks. It makes a wonderful base for other herbal blends. While Green Rooibos can be made into an iced tea or brewed cold, it is recommended that the tea be brewed hot to maximize flavor and potential health benefits.
